Project Management > Corporate Learning

The People Side of Project Management

  • Focuses on the leadership and team development aspects of project management
  • Based on interactive PC based simulation with over 100 decision scenarios

The workshop incorporates leading edge learning technology and covers the latest concepts in project management, using a state-of-the-art simulation tool.

About the workshop

The two day workshop focuses on the leadership aspects of project management and how people issues and organisational dynamics affect the final results of budget, schedule and quality. It enables participants to take over the running of a simulated project themselves and "learn by doing".

About half of the workshop is spent working with and debriefing the simulation, during which participants are put in teams of up to four people. Team members share viewpoints with each other and gain many insights through the process of working together.

Participants manage a simulated project from beginning to end. Over 100 scenarios cover many of the major issues that arise in a typical project, such as conflicting resources, external interference, the political environment, team motivation, client difficulties, specification changes etc. Each team, acting collectively as the project manager, must decide the best way to handle these issues.

The simulation was developed by Abbott Training Systems, leaders in project leadership simulation for over 25 years. Corporate Learning conducts the workshop under license from Abbott Training Systems.

In addition to the simulation, topics relevant to successful project management are discussed including stakeholder analysis, team development and managing the end of the project.

Outcomes of the workshop

At the end of the two-day workshop participants will be able to:

  • Use skills to create and lead an effective project team or work as a productive member of one.
  • Anticipate and solve classic project management problems.
  • Explain the effects of organisational dynamics on the project both internally and externally.
  • Manage issues such as external interference, losing project team members and scope creep.
  • Complete a project while managing the trade-offs between time, money and quality.
  • Balance the demands of the project with other organisational demands.

Corporate Learning has conducted many workshops in small and large organisations, including a major Australian bank.
