“Ricardo Semler – Brazil’s Caring Capitalist” is the transcript of an interview by Peter Martin which was recently televised on SBS.  Ricardo Semler of “Maverick” fame – a book published about 10 years ago – took empowerment to its extreme in his manufacturing and service company in Brazil.  Peter Martin made a recent visit to Semco and discovered one of the world’s most radical work places.  Read all about how this amazing company works by following the instructions from this link.

“Find Talent and Use It” is a BRW article quoting senior Australian and US leaders who not only espouse the value of their people but demonstrate their commitment to developing their senior talent.  Read how this investment in their people flows through to the bottom line.  The article ends with a few “how to do it” suggestions.  The link below will take you to the full article.

Presentation Pointers

Here is the fourth in our series of pointers to help you prepare and present to any size group with confidence and impact.   There are seven steps in the total process and the remaining pointers will be published in subsequent editions of e-Line.

4.  Rehearse

This sounds like it’s an overkill, boring and time consuming.  However, if I had to emphasise one of the pointers more than any others, it would this one.  You MUST rehearse your presentation.   It will give you confidence and ensure that your timing is accurate.

v       Rehearse your full presentation at least twice and up to five times if you're nervous about it and/or it's a really important presentation.

v       Time yourself every rehearsal.  Take only the time you have been allotted, including questions.

v       Use your visual aids every rehearsal.

v       If possible, use the room where you will be delivering the presentation or some similar room.

v       Deliver the presentation exactly as you will in the real situation, i.e. stand in the correct place, use your notes, visual aids, etc.

v       Speak slowly and clearly, at the pace at which you will deliver the presentation, to ensure your timing is accurate.

v       Memorise your opening statement.

v       Make sure you know how to operate the visual aids you will be using.

These tips are prepared by Linda McDonald of Corporate Learning.  If you can't wait for more e-Lines and need help with your preparation and delivery of presentations now, send an email to info@corporatelearning.com.au with your name, position, organisation, suburb and email address and we’ll email you the full document.  And, if you’ve just received this e-Line for the first time, get the first three in the series by sending us an email.

Topic 3

Winning Organisations

“The First XI:  Winning Organisations in Australia documents the findings of a three year research study to answer the questions:

·         Which are the high-performing organisations in Australia?

·         What do they do to be winners?

The research methodology was based on that used in “Built to Last”, published in the U.S. in 1994 and takes account of the unique aspects of the Australian business and social environment and culture.

The researchers and authors, Graham Hubbard, Delyth Samuel, Simon Heap and Graeme Cocks, identified nine principles of organisational life that lead to “winning”.  The organisations analysed in the study have existed for at least 20 years and have succeeded over long periods.  They define success as “using a balanced scorecard approach”, not just financial performance.

The principles and examples from the winning organisations will provide leaders with  inspiration and a practical framework for improving their organisational practice and eventually their organisational performance.  But, the authors warn, it is not about easy fixes!!

Topic 4

Gems of Wisdom

We continue our series of Rudolph Giuliani’s 15 Principles of Leadership from his book, “Giuliani Leadership”, that he co-authored with Ken Kurson.  You may recall that Giuliani was Mayor of New York City during the time of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre.  In his eight year term as mayor,  he reduced the welfare role from 1.1 million New Yorkers to less than 500,000 in less than five years.  Here are Principles No. 7 and 8 from “Giuliani Leadership”:

  1. Develop and Communicate Strong Beliefs.  “Ideology is exceptionally important in any large organisation’s management.  As a leader, everyone looking to me had a right to know my view, which is why it was so important for me to develop strong beliefs.  Stick to your word.  A leader is only as good as his (her) promises.  Your word determines your trustworthiness and is your most powerful tool for communicating your ideas and beliefs.”

  1. Be Your Own Man – or Woman.  “Being your own man – or woman – means you should never feel the need to abandon your principles.  Set an example; defy expectations and don’t let critics set your agenda.”

We will publish the remaining seven Giuliani principles in subsequent issues of e-Line.

Please forward this e-Line to a colleague.
